Is Skill Development effort really working in India?

Skill Development is a key parameter for a constant development model. When we talk about India’s young workforce, India really has an advantage but unfortunately, due to poor skills, the young population is not able to contribute in the nation’s growth.

To speed up the skill development programmes, central government on India has launched skill India programme under the banner of The National Skill Development Mission in 2015.  The skill India programme was created to apply various training programmes, infrastructure improvement suggestions and training of trainers. The Mission policy was to understand the diverse requirement of Indian industry and then create such skill enhance programme which can become beneficial for both workers and industries as well.

So now after almost three years, we need to analyze the impact of the skill development program and need to get an answer of a very common question as well that Is skill development effort is really working in India or not.

Still, there are so many challenges in skill development in India. Some of the major challenges are as follows.

Less Awareness About The Programme – Despite so much promotion of skill India programme, a huge proportion of the labor class is not aware that any such kind of programme is running in the country. Almost 70% of the youth are not aware of such a programme of skill development. So there is a big misalignment between the labor and government scheme and it is not creating much awareness about it.

Financial & Time Issue – These two are also one of the biggest reasons why the skill India effort weren’t becoming as successful as they were anticipated. With so much labor class is coming from the very poor financial background, it is clear that they do not have the capacity to spend extra money to get extra skill set.

The other issue is timing, no about would like to join the daytime skill development workshops because this will leads to a salary deduction. So the timing should be made such convenient that every person who wants to learn can enroll in the programme and take benefits from it.

Mismatch Increased – The Mismatch between the skill sets, training programmes and industry requirement has increased more. It is leading towards a situation where an industry is facing the shortage of skilled worker and on the other hand, youth is not able to get the job which they are looking for. To address this issue, all the three parameters should be kept in mind while creating the curriculum of the training programmes.

An Absence Of Skill Development Indicators – There is no such real-time data available in government which can be used to understand the impact of the skill development efforts.  So there is a big requirement to use skill development indicators to understand the impact of the skill development efforts and to create the future course of actions.

With so many changes coming in the industrial process, it is very important to let our youth understand the importance of skill development. Also, need to apply policy solution as per the local requirements of the youth to provide them equal chances to get good employment resources.
