Skill Gap Analysis In Chemical Industry

India is an emerging hub of manufacturing and production for multinational companies and native corporations alike. Apart from being a lucrative market for companies, the abundance of cheap labour has attracted companies to our shores and the liberalized economic policies add to the attractiveness of the country to investors. Industries and factories all need both skilled and unskilled workers and in the absence of required workers of required skills, it can significantly affect the productivity and efficiency of the production facility.

Skills Needed in the Chemical Industry

Chemical industry is one of the most skill intensive industries that require a certain level of skill to be employed. The skills needed for chemical industry are wide and need the workers to be versatile and have dedicated training to be able to operate the machines and production apparatus.

The skills and abilities needed for work in chemical industry are:

  • Ability to manage safety and regulatory aspects of chemical products
  • Ensure compliance of chemical regulatory guidelines
  • Aid the initial setup and implementation of a new design for a new product
  • Breaking down the production process in different components to better tackle issues and raise efficiency
  • Overseeing development and review the standard operating procedure
  • Oversee the whole production process from the very procurement of raw materials
  • Maintenance of records and the machinery involved in production of chemicals
  • Producing a variety of chemicals and operating the machines as per requirement
  • Ability to understand the machinery and do emergency repairs when needed
  • Knowledge of chemistry to understand the chemicals being used and the correct way of using them
  • Knowledge of operating procedures to ensure that the production process goes on without any issue
  • Ability to identify the issues in the production process
  • Ability to solve the identified issues

Skill Gap in the Chemical Industry

The skill gap refers to the difference between the skill level needed for a particular post and the actual skill of workers available to be appointed on the said post. The lack of specialized training has led to the skill gap growing wider and wider with fewer new workers skilled enough to deftly operate the said machinery.

Be it a production worker or a supervisor or a worker at a higher level in the production chain, the non-availability of skilled workers is severely affecting the productivity of chemical plants. In the absence of sufficiently skilled workers, the low skilled workers are a security as well as efficiency liability.

NEEM Scheme Can Help in Solving This Issue

The National Employability Enhancement Mission is directed towards providing the millions of unemployed youth the chance to acquire the required skill set to get employment in these industries. The millions of conventionally educated youth lack the required skillset and the NEEM scheme focuses on providing them with the needed skill development training through apprenticeship to solve the problems of both unemployment and lack of skilled workers in the country.
