What new skill sets should Indian youth focus on for making India self-sustainable

Skill sets are looked upon as something that boosts the probability of one’s employability. But often the overall importance of exposure in life is often ignored. The present youth of the nation believes that the competition is tougher than ever. What they tend to forget is that the exposure is also higher than ever with a surge of internet penetration and hordes of apps offering education and training at our fingertips. And there are various forms of these exposures: socio-economic surroundings, the environment in the school and college, sports, and such others. All of these factors play a huge role in shaping our characters and personality and cast a direct influence in professional life.

Presenting the budget before the Indians, the first woman finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, has highlighted the importance of bringing around 10 million youths to take part in the relevant skill development program. They should also be trained in such a way so that they are well prepared to go for work abroad. The present budget also lays interest in improving new-age skills like big data, internet of things, artificial intelligence, robotics, and virtual reality.

Now the question is, what are different skill sets expected from the youth of the nation? It has become more crucial than ever to have the right knowledge and skills before entering the workforce and here are some of them listed below:

  • Encouraging digital literacy

With the coronavirus taking its toll on all of us, the youth of India should be very adept in functioning digitally. The more you know about how the technology works and how you should work using it, the more appealing you become to your interviewer. The world is digitally advancing at a fast pace and people are expected to be familiar with a variety of technologies. As young people are preparing to enter the workforce, it is expected that they have knowledge of emerging technologies.

  • Developing problem-solving skills

Perhaps the most important of all skills are problem-solving skills. No matter which field you wish to join, problem-solving skills are never out of date. Young people are expected to be more open-minded and it could only be achieved by experience. The work culture is facing new changes and the rote methods are becoming obsolete. Therefore, it is desired that you have critical thinking skills so that you can adapt to various kinds of problems.

  • Taking up global citizenship

The advancements of technology have caused the world to become a much smaller space. In the past, employees just had to deal with the people of the same region. But now young people are sent to work all over the globe. So the new age workers should be more versatile and become global citizens while understanding and respecting others’ cultures and religions. In this case, it is best to be multilingual and also have the ability to bond well with the people hailing from different countries.

  • Having a love for learning

No one knows what the future holds for us and it is indefinite. Young people possess a love for learning and an unquenchable thirst to know more about various things. These traits are perfect for the modern work culture. Employers are always in search of well-rounded individuals and if you’re one of them, the chances of your employability become much higher.

  • Adapting cognitive flexibility

The workforce and its behavior is changing and there is no pattern in which this is happening. For young people to be successful, they should be more adaptive to changes. Many multinational companies are changing the way they work and thus, they expect their employees to change their work strategies as per need. By cognitive flexibility, it is meant that the youngsters should be able to cope up with the changing situation and deduce various problems and their probable solutions. It is best if they can look at a situation from different angles and think of the best solution for any issue that crops up.

Besides all these, young people should be able to access information from various sources and also analyze it. Self-knowledge is important and respecting others’ opinions and having emotional intelligence is a must. Regardless of the industry, you are associated with, it is best to have an entrepreneurship streak and the right knowledge for making a strong connection with people who can promote the business of the firm.
