Ask any employer in India about the biggest challenge faced in last two or three decades and the spontaneous response one gets is — the insufficient supply of skilled manpower. A great example of lack of skilled manpower in India is long-standing queues of customers in front of hair salon or bike service centers, the reason is pretty simple is that skilled manpower is always in demand.

The young & fresh newly graduated people remain jobless because they just want to start their career with a white collared job without having a handful of skill set.  

None of them wants to start from scratch or with small jobs to get real-time experience and skill sets. There are so many reasons why Indians remain skill-less despite higher studies is as follows.

  1. Poor Education System – People graduating from Indian education system fail to meet the expectation of industry due to lack of skill set and critical thinking and low level of communication skills as well. These results in the Indian industry houses have to provide additional training and workshops to make these fresh recruits suitable for their business requirements and industry expectations. A large number of people have to start their career which is totally irrelevant to their degree and educational qualification.

Most of the industry leaders feel that there should be a proper foundation in critical thinking and skill development to be included in the Indian education system to prepare upcoming graduates for the employment market. Majority of the industry expert have expressed their dissatisfaction over the curriculum of the professional courses. There is a huge gap between the current curriculum and industry requirements.

Recruitment of fresh graduates has become quite a challenge because the universities are producing such graduates who don’t have the basic skills to enter the industry let alone the expertise.

In the last decade, it was said that the new decade will belong to India, due to its huge young population which can drive its growth. but the truth is that the majority of these young people do not have the basic skill set to get the desired job. And now these young population has become a liability instead of an asset.

In a report, Niti ayog has said in India formal trained workforce is only 4.69 percent of the total workforce compared to countries like Germany with 75%, Korea with 96%.

Majority of Indian graduates lack the basic English skills and fail English competency test. lack of communication skills lowers their confidence. Most of the HR persons said many of the fresh pass-outs do not have the required critical thinking skills to keep up in this competitive and constantly changing business world. most employers are looking for people who have the skills to think outside of the box, can provide an analytical approach to any problem in their respective fields.

Irrelevant Study Material In Degree & Graduate Courses – Indian Youth across the country still wants to opt traditional educational and technical degrees, despite the fact that there are thousands of professionals who remain unemployed for the lack of relevant skills even after completing their degree courses. Majority of the youth do not want to start from the low profile job and wants to become a class one employee without spending much time in the industry. Majority of the people remain unemployed for years. After a long gap of years, they start to search the job after getting some extra certificates and skill sets.

There are thousands of engineering & MBA College who are producing lakhs of engineers and MBA graduates every year without any industry relevant skill sets. So what is the need of the hour? The need of the hour is to start more industrial training colleges and vocational course institutes. We need really skilled persons in every field. This is the reason why Indians have a very little contribution in the field of innovations and latest foundations.

So what is the permanent solution to the problem of skilled manpower in Indian industries, expert says, “It is a continuous process which keeps on changing with time & trends? So to produce a skilled workforce, every college and university must have skill development centers which should run on the latest industry standard and make people expert as per industry requirements.

Unfortunately, all the educational changes in Indian education system neglected the actual requirement of specific skill sets of industry in schools and colleges. Majority of the professional courses are running on total outdated syllabus and old age technology.  The students do not get practical & industrial knowledge and generally study on the fixed pattern and pre-decided course curriculum.

Govt. should make compulsory that every educational house must have skill development laboratory and their syllabus should be decided by the industry experts. This should be revised on yearly basis and must be in line with current trends and industrial skills.

Technologically Driven Education System – The only issue with the current syllabus is that the content gets outdated as the time progress because educational content keeps on changing.  To overcome such issues it is very important to provide totally update curriculum to the students. In this manner, technical advancement will be very helpful in creating the latest syllabus for the students.

Now the scenario is changing at a slow speed and some of the schools are putting their focus on the extracurricular activities.  They provide different skills sets to learns in terms of problem-solving, writing skills, analytical skills and more. Such productive activities should be made compulsory for each student in the country.
