“Skills and not the Degree”: the criteria to be successful

Many of us focus on hunting for a dream job, and sometimes we succeed  in getting one, but we think that with the degree we have achieved, we will get the job and obviously we get one, but seldom do we think, do we have the skills or the expertise that fit for the job?. No. We don’t, it’s all the need of the hour and help us meet the ends.

At the same time, every year graduates pass out of colleges and most of them are not fit for the job they are looking, on the other hand, National Skill Development Corporation has expressed its ambition of providing adequate skills to 78 million Indians in ten years. Although the country is giving it all to curb the unemployment rate and make the youth skillful.

The education system needs to train the students to be skillful.

Take, for instance, an engineer from any sector can give many ways to tackle a problem on paper, but to practice it himself, he is inadequate, this is where it is important to be skillful in the job. Candidates often learn the skills on the job, but they are not getting the jobs because they don’t have the required skills, so where do they go for practical learning. It’s actually the educational system that needs to step in and provide the skills that are needed to get the job. For most of the companies, it’s all about the mark sheets that matters, that has made each one of us incompetent with the skills and we are in the rat race of getting good marks.

A lot of educational institutions only teach the students, how to get good marks in their exams and get a  job in India or abroad, but hardly anybody talks about ideas. Yes, going to a foreign country and getting a high paying job is a big deal for us Indians. It’s fed to us right from an early age, that to get a job, it’s important to score good marks. Nobody says to be skillful.

When I read just for the sake of exams and memorize the subjects and score marks. What I get is a piece of paper that says I am a graduate, but the question to ask is, am I actually a skilled person?. Education should not be only about marks, it should be beyond marks and grades. Education should be all about learning and being skillful in the chosen field. Skill is very important in any sector. There should be many more training institutes where practical exposure is needed.

A college degree is useless if you want to be a successful entrepreneur.

Education is like downloading data into our brains and it is bad in conventional education. A lot of times in business education today, we see it all the time, kids come out of college and they won’t have practical knowledge. They are actually not prepared for what they are getting themselves into. There is obviously a need to have a college degree, at least in India. That’s how you get a job and the experience. If somebody graduates with a degree, it could be an indication that they are capable of greater things, but that’s not always going to be the case.

If you look at successful people like Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, or Steve jobs they did not have a college degree. Having flexibility in understanding a lot of different things in college is one of the remarkable things. People really undervalue flexibility. It is important to explore what you want to do? Before starting anything and make sure you have the right skills before committing to it.

Empowering social economy.

Industrialization cannot be without adequate infrastructure: According to an estimate, economic losses from traffic and bad roads in India add up to 4 to 6 billion dollars. Another estimate is that the cost of most of India’s infrastructure is about 50% to 100% more than China. The average cost of electricity for manufacturing in India is almost double in China; The transportation cost of the railway in India is three times more than China. China has spent eight times more on India than on its infrastructure. Three years ago, China’s total capital expenditure on electricity, construction, transportation, telecommunications, and real estate was far less than India. That’s because China has more skilled employees.

The objective of essaying this is to show that in employment and training services, there will be a change in areas like technical training, vocational training relating to manufacturing. The Indian government and private sectors will play a key role in filling the gap between skilled labor supply and demand. In the present situation, 2 percent of the employees in India have been trained for skill development; India can possibly become the center for sourcing skilled employees to the world. Skill production can be seen as a tool to improve the efficiency and the contribution of labor for overall production. This production is an important component of pushing the line in front of the prospect and moving the economy at a higher rate. Skills can also be seen as a tool for empowering the person and improving his social acceptance.

Strides NSDC is taking in Skilling the youth.

Skill requirement is not the same in all the sectors, it would not be the correct way to list a few skills and apply them in all sectors.

A right employee to be called as a skillful should have qualities such as;

  • Should be hands-on than theoretical knowledge.
  • Should have adequate technical skills.
  • Should be verbally sound.
  • Should match the skills that are of industry standards.

To meet the above criteria NSDC launched one of its program’s of skill India mission called  “Empowering the nation, Skill India reaffirms Fark Dikh Raha Hai” in 2015, under the ministry of Skill Development and entrepreneurship. This program has helped more than 10 million people in India on a yearly basis, and with this India is making headway in becoming the Skill capital of the world. Its three most important interventions; Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), National Apprenticeship promotion Scheme and Industrial Training Institutions have changed the ecosystem of Skilling and helped to provide a better livelihood to millions of Indians.
